Song of Durin
[00:16.90] Song of Durin
[00:28.05] The world was young, the mountains green,
[00:34.16] No stain yet on the Moon was seen,
[00:38.68] No words were laid on stream or stone
[00:43.72] When Durin woke and walked alone.
[00:50.14] He named the nameless hills and dells;
[00:56.77] He drank from yet untasted wells;
[01:03.68] He stooped and looked in Mirrormere,
[01:10.05] And saw a crown of stars appear,
[01:16.96] As gems upon a silver thread,
[01:22.55] Above the shadows of his head.
[01:28.93] The world was fair, the mountains tall,
[01:34.51] In Elder Days before the fall
[01:39.55] Of mighty kings in Nargothrond
[01:44.34] And Gondolin, who now beyond
[01:51.51] The Western Seas have passed away:
[01:56.82] The world was fair in Durin's Day.
[02:05.06] A king he was on carven throne
[02:09.57] In many-pillared halls of stone
[02:14.36] With golden roof and silver floor,
[02:19.40] And runes of power upon the door.
[02:24.18] The light of sun and star and moon
[02:28.70] In shining lamps of crystal hewn
[02:33.74] Undimmed by cloud or shade of night
[02:38.53] There shone for ever fair and bright.
[02:45.98] There hammer on the anvil smote,
[02:50.50] There chisel clove, and graver wrote;
[02:55.28] There forged was blade, and bound was hilt;
[02:59.79] The delver mined, the mason built.
[03:04.84] There beryl, pearl, and opal pale,
[03:09.89] And metal wrought like fishes' mail,
[03:14.67] Buckler and corslet, axe and sword,
[03:19.18] And shining spears were laid in hoard.
[03:30.60] Unwearied then were Durin's folk;
[03:37.25] Beneath the mountains music woke:
[03:43.89] The harpers harped, the minstrels sang,
[03:49.46] And at the gates the trumpets rang.
[03:56.11] The world is grey, the mountains old,
[04:01.42] The forge's fire is ashen-cold;
[04:06.73] No harp is wrung, no hammer falls:
[04:11.58] The darkness dwells in Durin's halls;
[04:18.75] The shadow lies upon his tomb
[04:24.86] In Moria, in Khazad-dûm.
[04:31.76] But still the sunken stars appear
[04:38.67] In dark and windless Mirrormere;
[04:45.31] There lies his crown in water deep,
[04:52.22] Till Durin wakes again from sleep.
