The River

[00:17.38] I come from down in the valley

[00:21.45] Where, mister, when you're young

[00:25.48] They bring you up to do like your daddy done

[00:33.38] Me and Mary we met in high school

[00:38.18] When she was just seventeen

[00:42.24] We drive out of this valley

[00:46.28] Down to where the fields were green

[00:52.14] We'd go down to the river

[00:56.46] And into the river we'd dive

[01:00.25] Oh, down to the river we'd ride

[01:09.16] Then I got Mary pregnant

[01:12.98] And man, that was all she wrote

[01:18.07] And for my nineteenth birthday

[01:20.86] I got a union card and a wedding coat

[01:25.72] We went down to the courthouse

[01:29.51] And the judge put it all to rest

[01:34.13] No wedding day smiles, no walk down the aisle

[01:38.18] No flowers, no wedding dress

[01:41.77] That night we went down to the river

[01:46.37] And into the river we'd dive

[01:49.93] Oh, down to the river we did ride

[01:56.08] Yeah, yeah

[02:34.37] I got a job working construction

[02:37.89] For the Johnstown Company

[02:42.59] But lately there ain't been much work

[02:46.15] On account of the economy

[02:50.47] Now all them things that seemed so important

[02:54.29] Well mister they vanished right into the air

[02:58.63] Now I just act like I don't remember

[03:02.69] Mary acts like she don't care

[03:07.00] But I remember us riding in my brother's car

[03:11.11] Her body tan and wet, down at the reservoir

[03:15.19] At night on them banks I'd lie awake

[03:19.21] And pull her close just to feel each breath she'd take

[03:23.77] Now those memories come back to haunt me

[03:27.56] They haunt me like a curse

[03:32.17] Is a dream a lie if it don't come true

[03:36.22] Or is it something worse

[03:39.48] That sends me down to the river

[03:44.07] Though I know the river is dry

[03:47.86] That sends me down to the river tonight

[03:57.21] Down to the river

[04:00.72] My baby and I

[04:04.29] Oh, down to the river we ride
