The Day Before You Came
[00:03.11] I must have left my house at eight because I always do
[00:13.83] My train, I′m certain, left the station just when it was due
[00:21.71] I must have read the morning paper going into town
[00:29.88] And having gotten through the editorial, no doubt I must have frowned
[00:39.45] I must have made my desk
[00:43.69] Around a quarter after nine
[00:47.63] With letters to be read
[00:52.42] And heaps of papers waiting to be signed
[00:56.64] I must have gone to lunch
[01:01.43] At half past 12 or so
[01:03.40] The usual place, the usual bunch
[01:06.79] And still on top of this, I'm pretty sure it must have rained
[01:12.99] The day before you came
[01:18.91] I must have lit my seventh cigarette at half past two
[01:26.23] And at the time, I never even noticed I was blue
[01:34.12] I must have kept on dragging
[01:38.06] Through the business of the day
[01:41.72] Without really knowing anything
[01:46.51] I hid a part of me away
[01:50.74] At five, I must have left
[01:55.24] There′s no exception to the rule
[01:59.75] A matter of routine
[02:03.70] I've done it ever since I finished school
[02:09.06] The train back home again
[02:12.44] Undoubtedly, I must have read the evening paper then
[02:17.80] Oh yes, I'm sure my life was well within its usual frame
[02:24.28] The day before you came
[02:29.91] I must have opened my front door at eight o′clock or so
[03:08.21] And stopped along the way to buy some Chinese food to go
[03:16.11] I′m sure I had my dinner watching something on TV
[03:23.43] There's not, I think, a single episode of Dallas that I didn′t see
[03:32.73] I must have gone to bed
[03:37.24] Around a quarter after ten
[03:41.18] I need a lot of sleep
[03:46.26] And so I like to be in bed by then
[03:50.48] I must have read a while
[03:54.99] The latest one by Marilyn French or something in that style
[04:00.35] It's funny, but I had no sense of living without aim
[04:06.82] The day before you came
[04:12.74] And turning out the light
[04:16.11] I must have yawned and cuddled up for yet another night
[04:21.18] And rattling on the roof I must have heard the sound of rain
[04:28.78] The day before you came
