TALUMPATI
[00:06.97] God, I'm full of so much gratitude right now.
[00:12.73] And I do not feel elevated above any
[00:14.97] of my fellow nominees or anyone in
[00:17.48] this room because we share the same
[00:20.48] love, the love of film.
[00:23.98] And this form of expression has
[00:26.22] given me the most extraordinary life.
[00:29.47] I don't know what I'd be without it.
[00:33.72] But I think the greatest gift that
[00:37.47] it's given me, and many of us in this
[00:40.47] room, is the opportunity to use our
[00:43.22] voice for the voiceless.
[00:47.24] I've been thinking a lot about
[00:49.48] some of the distressing issues
[00:53.25] that we are facing collectively.
[00:57.47] I think at times we feel,
[00:59.73] or we're made to feel,
[01:02.47] that we champion different causes.
[01:05.97] But for me, I see commonality.
[01:10.72] I think, whether we're talking about
[01:13.48] gender inequality or racism
[01:15.72] or queer rights or indigenous rights
[01:18.98] or animal rights, we're talking about the fight against injustice.
[01:25.47] We're talking about the fight
[01:28.97] against the belief that one nation,
[01:31.24] one people, one race, one gender
[01:35.72] or one species has the right to dominate,
[01:39.72] control and use and exploit another
[01:42.47] with impunity.
[01:44.47] I think that we've become very
[01:47.47] disconnected from the natural world,
[01:50.73] and many of us, what we're guilty of
[01:54.47] is an egocentric world view —
[01:58.47] the belief that we're the center
[02:02.22] of the universe.
[02:04.72] We go into the natural world,
[02:07.72] and we plunder it for its resources.
[02:10.47] We feel entitled to artificially
[02:13.73] inseminate a cow, and when she gives
[02:16.98] birth, we steal her baby,
[02:18.72] even though her cries of anguish are unmistakable.
[02:22.01] Then we take her milk that's intended
[02:23.97] for her calf, and we put it in our coffee and our cereal.
[02:28.98] And I think we fear the idea of
[02:32.97] personal change because we think that
[02:37.24] we have to sacrifice something,
[02:40.97] to give something up, but human beings, at our best,
[02:45.01] are so inventive and creative and ingenious.
[02:48.97] And I think that when we use love
[02:52.98] and compassion as our guiding principles,
[02:55.97] we can create,
[02:57.74] develop and implement systems of change that are beneficial
[03:03.73] to all sentient beings and to the
[03:06.01] environment.
[03:08.47] Now, I have been,
[03:11.72] I have been a scoundrel in my life.
[03:16.97] I've been selfish.
[03:19.49] I've been cruel at times,
[03:21.73] hard to work with, and I'm grateful that so many of you in
[03:27.48] this room have given me a second
[03:29.97] chance.
[03:32.49] And I think that's when we're at our best,
[03:36.22] when we support each other,
[03:39.49] not when we cancel each other out
[03:44.22] for past mistakes, but when we
[03:47.22] help each other to grow,
[03:50.22] when we educate each other,
[03:51.98] when we guide each other toward redemption.
[03:56.22] That is the best of humanity.
