[00:00.39] Abidemi: Hi. So Rory.
[00:02.88] Rory: Yeah, hi.
[00:03.88] Abidemi: Hi. Are you an introvert or an extrovert?
[00:06.63] Rory: I’m not sure, you know. Sometimes I think that I’m basically an introvert.
[00:12.63] Like as I get older, I much prefer my own company.
[00:16.88] Abidemi: Interesting.
[00:17.63] Rory: I don’t really like going to parties that much if there’s going to be new people there.
[00:22.13] If it’s my friends, I’m happy to go out, but I don’t know.
[00:25.88] What about you?
[00:26.88] Abidemi: It’s funny what you said. I feel the same way.
[00:29.13] I think sometimes I’m an introvert and other times I can be an extrovert. But maybe in reverse to what you said.
[00:39.88] I feel like the older I get, the more extroverted I become.
[00:43.88] Rory: That’s interesting.
[00:44.63] Abidemi: While I was younger, I was a lot shier, so I preferred my own company.
[00:49.13] But now I find that sometimes too, I really enjoy people. So I like to meet new ones. So yeah.
[00:55.13] Rory: Yes. In the classroom, as a teacher, I’m quite an extrovert I think.
[01:00.39] I quite like being up in front of students and showing of, but I would never do that in front of other teachers or my friends, in my personal life.
[01:10.39] Abidemi: Interesting.
[01:11.13] Rory: But something about the classroom maybe because it’s my environment and I’m in control that I feel more comfortable, like being more extroverted and showing off, camping up.
[01:22.64] Abidemi: I think it would be a little difficult to be introverted if you were a language teacher.
[01:28.89] I think it certainly helps to be extroverted or to act to be able to become more extroverted when you’re in the classroom for sure. For sure.
[01:37.63] Rory: Yeah. And have you ever done anything really extroverted, like performed in public?
[01:44.63] Abidemi: Before I used to sing actually, and I have sang in concerts.
[01:49.13] Rory: Right.
[01:49.89] Abidemi: And it’s true. I think that’s where my introverted self really comes out because although I enjoy singing and I like the attention to a certain extent,
[02:01.63] but I get really nervous. Really, really nervous when I’m in front of a large crowd.
[02:06.63] And sometimes I’m like, “Why am I doing this to myself? Why am I here?”
[02:09.63] Rory: Yeah.
[02:10.38] Abidemi: But yeah, I don’t do that so much anymore.
[02:13.13] Rory: Right. And do you think people can change? Do you think people – because people seem to want to become more extroverted?
[02:19.38] It seems to be like society says extroverted people are successful people.
[02:24.38] Abidemi: It’s true.
[02:24.88] Rory: Do you think people can change or do you think people should try to change?
[02:28.39] Abidemi: I’ve heard of actually people saying that depending on the language that people change with the language.
[02:34.38] I’ve heard of some of my students saying that when they speak in a different language, their personality actually changes, where maybe in their own language, they may be quieter.
[02:46.63] But when they speak the different language, they become a lot more extroverted.
[02:51.38] Rory: Right.
[02:51.88] Abidemi: It’s as if they change. So whether or not it’s a real change I think you can “fake it” quote-unquote even if you’re not an extrovert or an introvert.
[03:02.63] Maybe for a few hours or for the occasion. Yeah, you can pretend, and then go back.
[03:07.38] Rory: Right. I wonder if when we speak a different language, we don’t have the same connections with the words.
[03:12.63] Abidemi: That’s true.
[03:13.38] Rory: It makes it easier to maybe speak more honestly and not worry about what other people think of us.
[03:19.13] Abidemi: That’s true.
