[00:00.64] Waduri: Okay, Danu. Now, let's talk about what do you have in Sri Lanka for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
[00:06.89] Danu: Sure Widuri. So in Sri Lanka, I will talk about my breakfast first.
[00:11.38] Waduri: Okay. Breakfast.
[00:12.39] Danu: So in Sri Lanka, there are different kinds of breakfast menus for Sri Lankans.
[00:18.38] For example, we eat so much grains, nuts, and we eat rice as well. But for rice, the special thing in Sri Lanka is we cook milk rice.
[00:32.14] Waduri: Milk rice.
[00:33.14] Danu: Do you know how do we cook milk rice?
[00:34.89] Waduri: No, but it sounds interesting.
[00:36.63] Danu: Yes. We put coconut oil and coconut milk in the cooked rice and we make it milk rice.
[00:46.64] And we eat that milk rice with a special paste of chilies and dried fish. It's really delicious and really healthy.
[00:58.64] And apart from that, we have fruits and salads as well.
[01:05.38] For example, Sri Lanka is a tropical country and we have many kinds of different fruits all around the area.
[01:14.13] So for example, oranges, star fruits, mangosteen, bananas, are the most popular fruits for breakfast menu.
[01:25.13] Waduri: Oh, interesting. So that chili paste, it means spicy? That milk rice will be spicy?
[01:32.88] Danu: Yes, because of the coconut milk, it's a bit sweet but at the same time because of the chili paste, it's hot.
[01:39.38] Waduri: Wow.
[01:40.88] Danu: So you can adjust your spiciness as you wish.
[01:43.88] Waduri: Oh so, you eat spicy food in the morning. Then what about lunch?
[01:47.63] Danu: Oh for the lunch, it's usually everybody eats rice and curry. But in Sri Lanka, rice and curry doesn't mean just rice and one dish of curry.
[02:00.39] We usually make three to four dishes. And it might be fish curry, some vegetables, and another vegetable salad.
[02:09.14] For example, the other vegetable curry might be cabbage while the salad might be some homegrown leaves. Very healthy food.
[02:21.39] Waduri: Wow. Another healthy food. So you have salad for both breakfast and lunch.
[02:26.14] Danu: Yes, it depends. So you can – some people have both for breakfast and lunch.
[02:31.39] But usually, it's for lunch, we have a salad of leaves.
[02:37.14] Waduri: Is that what you always have at your school and home?
[02:40.89] Danu: Usually, my mom makes my food for me to take to school.
[02:44.39] So my parents, they don't like – they don't want me to eat from outside because it's healthier to eat home.
[02:51.38] So my mom makes sure that I take proper food to school. So basically, yes, I eat my homemade food.
[03:01.64] Waduri: So she makes sure you eat your salad, right?
[03:05.38] Danu: Yes. She makes sure I eat my salad.
[03:07.89] Waduri: Nice. Then what about dinner?
[03:09.64] Danu: For dinner. For dinner, it's a very simple dish. In Sri Lanka, in our culture, we say that you should eat like a king for breakfast.
[03:20.38] Eat like a prince for the lunch. And eat like a beggar for the dinner.
[03:24.64] That's because of the healthy lifestyle we follow.
[03:29.89] So for dinner, it might be a simple dish like bread and some gravy or another dish called pittu.
[03:41.39] Waduri: Pittu?
[03:44.13] Danu: Yes.
[03:45.14] Waduri: What is that?
[03:45.88] Danu: Pittu is made with grounded coconuts and flour.
[03:50.88] You mix it. And you boil it. You steam it. Steam-boil it.
[03:55.39] So it becomes a very simple food, and you put some coconut milk on it, and you'll eat it.
[04:02.64] Waduri: Is it sweet?
[04:03.89] Danu: You can make it sweet and you can make it hot depending on what ingredients do you use.
[04:10.14] So in Sri Lanka, we use lots of different spices, so depending on what spices you use, you can change the flavor as well.
[04:18.63] Waduri: Wow. Interesting. It seems like you have a lot spices in Sri Lanka.
[04:23.13] And then what about snack time. Do you have snack time?
[04:27.88] Danu: Yes, definitely. We have a snack time in the evening.
[04:31.39] For example, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, we usually have tea.
[04:37.88] Waduri: Tea?
[04:38.39] Danu: Milk tea with some cookies.
[04:39.39] Waduri: Oh nice.
[04:40.38] Danu: That's like family tea time. So we sit together. We have some cookies, maybe some bananas, and we drink milk tea.
[04:49.89] Have you tried Sri Lanka's tea?
[04:51.88] Waduri: I think I remember—what is it again? Ceylon tea.
[04:58.14] Danu: Yes, it is Ceylon tea.
[04:59.13] Waduri: Ceylon tea.
[04:59.89] Danu: Ceylon tea.
[05:00.88] Waduri: Ceylon tea.
[05:01.64] Danu: Yes.
[05:02.13] Waduri: So you mix the milk with that Ceylon tea.
[05:05.13] Danu: That's right. We mix the milk with Ceylon tea.
[05:08.13] Waduri: Interesting. I want to try it.
[05:09.89] Danu: You should try it. It's very delicious.
[05:11.88] Waduri: Okay. Thank you, Danu.
[05:13.38] Danu: Thank you, Waduri.
